Effective Communicator

One of the most effective communicators that I had the privilege to listen to was Dr. Lillian Katz.  I heard her speak as a keynote speaker at the NCaeyc study conference a couple of years ago.  She is a very motivational speaker that maintains the attention of the group that she is speaking with.  She was respectful in her communication about children and used her life experiences as examples that went along with what she was talking about.  As the keynote speaker she had a large group of early childhood professionals to speak to and she did a very crowded two hour session afterwards.  She invited people to ask questions and to share their thoughts or experiences with the group.  This was a professional setting in which she used her body and voice to get her meaning across to the crowd of people listening to her.  Her message was received as questions were asked to make sure that they understood what she was saying.

Dr. Katz was very motivational in her speaking and I would recommend her if you ever got the opportunity to listen to her.

  1. It is hard to keep an audience interested and motivated for two hours. She must have effectively related to her audience during her keynote presentation and during the two-hour session.

  2. Luci,
I would love to hear Lilian Katz speak. I found her written work so interesting and full of words of wisdom; it sounds like her presentations in person would not disappoint! I think you brought up a good point, it is always more interesting and easier to listen to someone who has a real passion for the topic of their presentation.

  5. Hi Luci,
You are lucky to be in a place where you get opportunities to attend such study conferences and listen and learn from renowned educationalists. Out here in UAE such opportunities are very rare. Even if there are any educational conferences, it caters to high school children or children with developmental problems. Early years still needs recognition in this part of the world. However, I am pleased that now there are organizations like Early Years Educational Services (affiliated with NAEYC) consisting of a team of highly experienced educational trainers and consultants who are offering teacher training workshops. These workshops help in giving us ideas on how to improvise and create innovative strategies that would help us to offer better quality of educational experiences to our students. I guess we have to be thankful that at least we have these workshops now, any of which was not available until two years back.
